In the hearts and minds of many discerning consumers, lifestyle products retailer MUJI is synonymous with all that is quintessential about Japanese design: its products are simple, sleek, minimal, eco-conscious and lovingly-crafted.

Established in 1980, the name MUJI is derived from Mujirushi Ryohin, translated as No Brand Quality Goods. MUJI is distinguished by its design minimalism yet highly focus on product’s quality.

Products range from pens, notebooks and clothing for men, women and children to food items, crockery, major kitchen appliances and home furnishings. Its primary business includes Café MUJI, Meal MUJI, MUJI Campsite, floristry and home furnishing. The retailer has also taken steps into housing construction.

International retail outlets can be found in the United Kingdom, France, Italy, Germany, Ireland, Sweden, Norway, Spain, Turkey, Poland, Hong Kong, Singapore, South Korea, China, Taiwan, Thailand, Indonesia, and the United States.

Although MUJI styles itself as a brandless brand, some of its most popular designs are by well known and established designers. The iconic Wall Mounted CD player is designed by Naoto Fukasawa, the 2nd phone, MUJI playing cards and dominos are designed by Sam Hecht, while a teapot/crockery set were designed by the Azumis.

Born in 1957, Masaaki KANAI is President of Ryohin Keikaku, official corporate name of MUJI. He has held this position since 2008, serving to strategically guide the company’s ventures toward sustainable success. He is also President of IDÉE and a director of Hana-Ryohin, both subsidiaries of the business. Owing to management positions that include managing director, chief director of product, director of daily goods and chief director of sales, KANAI commands meticulous knowledge about the Group’s strategies and operations, as well as MUJI’s innovative philosophy. KANAI first joined Ryohin Keikaku in 1993.
